Observe Root Systems
Intercultures are often compared with each other by observing their aerial biomasses. This is useful but not sufficient. The underground biomass is also very interesting and varies greatly between species. Here is a series of reproductions of the main plant cover crops. Soft wheat is also shown for comparison. The most interesting root systems in terms of prospecting are the sunflower (here sunflower in traditional spring sowing) and the fodder radish.

Thus, the choice of plant cover must take into account their impact on the natural restructuring of a soil after harvest. Water infiltration is accelerated, packed and wet areas can be cracked by the roots. Also, the cover is food for earthworms. The lifespan of the canopy is also to be considered. The longer a cover is left, the stronger its prospecting.
Thus, the root system of the canopy is essential for enabling soil health improvements. To do this, it must be left to set in place long enough ... 2 months is not enough!
